Goddess Aphrodite (Venus), the Goddess of Love and Beauty, requires expressions of mystic love between the masculine and feminine. A woman who worships Aphrodite is graceful, brave and charming: she will not allow herself to be dishonored.  Without genuine joy and love between partners, the pathway to Goddess Aphrodite is lost. To delight a woman is to draw on Goddess Aphrodite’s intimacy.

To worship God Dionysus is to be devoted to communion with mystical and emotional experience that happens within the body. He encourages the women who worship him, the maenads, to dance and sing and celebrate ecstatic experience through their bodies. Goddess Ariadne, the Goddess of the Labyrinth, is originally a mortal princess, daughter of King Minos of Crete. Ariadne gives Theseus, prince of Athens, the ball of string that guides him silently into the Labyrinth to the sleeping Minotaur, the half man/ half bull monster that requires fourteen youths to be sacrificed to him each year. Theseus kills the Minotaur, follows the string back out of the Labyrinth and sails away to Athens with Ariadne, whom he promises to marry. Theseus abandons Ariadne on a deserted island so he can sail away to marry another woman. Ariadne dies of grief. God Dionysus resurrects her and makes her his wife and Goddess of the Labyrinth. God Dionysus is faithful and committed to his wife and Goddess. He is the only God who is monogamous to his wife. Worshipers of Goddess Ariadne know that a woman needs to find her own capacity for illuminating herself. She needs to move away from heartless mortal men and on to a sacred marriage with a God whose potency is like wine and whose love is like honey.

God Apollo, the God of music, Prophecy and Light, champions logic and regards women from above. He teaches that women should be restrained, curbed and brought into subjection. He believes that the spark of creativity, intelligence and enlightenment is masculine. To Apollo, a pregnant woman is merely a custodian of masculine creation. God Apollo’s spirit wants to approach the Sun, to go higher towards rationality, logic and science. He rejects his terrestrial home as valuable or important. He is obsessed with masculine superiority in all things. He is incapable of maintaining a loving relationship with a woman as he keeps women under his rule. He is an arrogant and talented musician who challenges other musicians to compete with him and then heartlessly skins them alive. Apollo wrested control of the Delphic Oracle, the gift of prophecy, by force from the Goddess Gaia, Mother Earth. Worshipers of Apollo believe in the absolute power of the patriarch–that only a man can be on top as the dominant personality. The patriarch seeks to confirm his status as exclusive master. The patriarch believes that successful love removes itself as far as possible from the senses and the body of a woman.

Goddess Artemis (Diana), the Goddess of Animals, the Hunt, Birth and the Moon, is God Apollo’s twin sister and opposite. She wants solitude and autonomy at any price. She rejects the sexual bond, despite her beauty and desirability. She teaches women that feminine separatism becomes the only way of escaping male domination over women. Goddess Artemis and her fierce independence preserves a woman from identification with society. A woman who worships Goddess Artemis is cured of the compulsive need to be liked and surrounded by men. She learns that solitude is an inner space that must be defended without guilt. A woman of Artemis protects herself from physical or psychological intrusion and does not easily open her arms to people. Goddess Artemis encourages a woman to submit to the powerful workings of untamed nature, especially during the pain of birth. An Artemis worshiper defends sacred interior and exterior feminine territory from abuse and from men. She celebrates her feminine powers with animals and Moon spirituality.

She teaches a woman to involve herself with her family of origin and to enjoy the affections of her family. A woman of Hestia knows she is powerful, valuable and useful even if she chooses not to be employed or married. The presence of Hestia brings family together by creating an abundance of food, love and material security within the home.
